What Is Emergency Dentistry?

A dental emergency is an urgent situation affecting the teeth or mouth that needs immediate attention by a dentist. Severe pain, a knocked out tooth, or any other dental injury or problem should be addressed as soon as possible. Don’t wait. Call us right away in a dental emergency. Prompt treatment can make all the difference when it comes to saving your child’s tooth.

How To Handle Dental Emergencies

Here are some of the most common dental emergencies and how to handle them:

  • Avulsion (Knocked out tooth). If a permanent tooth gets knocked completely out of the socket, handle it by the crown of the tooth only and avoid touching the roots. Rinse it off carefully (plug the drain first) and place it back in the socket. Have your child bite down on some clean gauze and call us. If you can’t get it back in place, put it in some milk and bring it with you to our office. Do not put a baby tooth back in the socket. Save the tooth in milk and call us.
  • Fractured (Broken) tooth. For a chipped or broken tooth, save the pieces in milk if you have them and call us. We may be able to reattach the broken pieces. If not, the tooth may be saved with dental bonding or a crown.
  • Dislodged tooth. For a tooth that is knocked loose or out of place, call us. It will most likely need to be splinted for support until the tissues can heal and tighten back down around it.
  • Toothache. For a severe toothache, call us at any time. The tooth may be infected and in need of nerve or other treatment. For a minor toothache, call us during regular office hours and we will assess the tooth and provide treatment.
  • Soft tissue injury. A soft tissue injury to the mouth may need immediate treatment. If bleeding is under control, call us and we will see you as soon as possible. If there is uncontrolled bleeding, call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

Why shouldn’t you put a knocked out baby tooth back in the socket?
When a baby tooth is knocked out of the socket before it is ready to be shed, it should not be put back in place because it can damage the permanent tooth underneath. In the case of a knocked out baby tooth, save the tooth in milk and call us for further instructions.
Why should a knocked out tooth be put in milk instead of water?
Water can cause a knocked out tooth to begin breaking down and drying out, which can reduce the chances that it can be put back in place. Milk is safer and gentler on tooth enamel. In many cases saliva will also work to keep the tooth moist.
How do I know when a situation is an emergency?
If any of the above situations occurs, it is considered to be an emergency. Whenever something happens that makes you question the urgency, it is best to call us and we will determine whether or not your child needs immediate treatment. Acting quickly increases the chances of a positive outcome.
How long can a tooth survive out of the mouth?
The best chance of saving a knocked out tooth is within 30 minutes of the incident. In some cases a tooth that is stored in milk can survive and be put back in place with success up to 60 minutes after it is knocked out.
What causes a toothache?
A toothache is often an indication of an infected tooth. When bacteria invades a tooth through a crack or cavity, it can infect the dental pulp, which is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves. An infected permanent tooth can be treated with a root canal, which removes the pulp and fills the tooth with a radiopaque material.
Do soft tissue injuries require stitches?
In some cases a soft tissue injury may require stitches to control bleeding and promote healing. Dental stitches used inside the mouth typically dissolve naturally over time as the tissue heals without needing to be removed.
Does a chipped or fractured tooth need a root canal?
Depending on the situation, a permanent tooth that is chipped or broken may need a root canal. It typically depends on the size of the portion that has broken off and whether or not the dental pulp is at risk.
When is an emergency life threatening?
If there is uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness, call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency department, whichever will be faster. Do not call us or wait for a call back if any of these situations occur. Take immediate action.
