What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medically induced relaxation techniques to make dental procedures less stressful and more tolerable for patients. Children are often anxious or fearful about receiving dental care, and sedation can help them relax. In some cases sedation is medically necessary for the safety of the patient.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry offers many benefits for children, including:

Reduced stress. Sedation can help both children and parents feel more relaxed and experience less stress before, during, and after dental procedures.

Prevent dental anxiety. Sedation can prevent children from developing dental anxiety from fear of dental treatment.

Shorter procedures. Dental procedures can be completed in a shorter amount of the time when the child is sedated and calm.

Improved quality of care. The quality of dental treatment can be improved when the child is under sedation.

Sedation Options We Offer

We provide the following types of sedation:

Nitrous Oxide. For minor dental procedures, nitrous oxide provides a light level of sedation to help patients relax. A mask is placed over the nose that delivers the nitrous oxide. As the child breathes in and out through their nose a calm feeling will take over to help them relax. Nitrous oxide takes effect in just a few minutes and wears off just as quickly, allowing them to resume their regular daily activities after the procedure.

Hospital Sedation. For some children, dental procedures may require hospital sedation. General anesthesia is administered in a hospital setting in order to carefully monitor the patient’s vitals and ensure their health and safety.

Is Your Child A Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

If your child feels nervous or afraid when it comes to receiving dental care, they may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Sedation is especially helpful for children with special needs who are more likely to require relaxation assistance. We may recommend sedation for procedures that are particularly complex or lengthy for the comfort of the patient.

Why Choose Akoya Pediatric Dentistry?

We understand that dental anxiety is a very real condition that affects many children and even adults. In fact, most adults with dental anxiety can trace it back to a single negative experience they had at the dentist, often in childhood. Sedation dentistry can prevent a lifetime of fear and anxiety, allowing children to get the dental care they need now and throughout adulthood.

Our doctors and dental team are highly trained and experienced in the administration of Nitrous Oxide. We carefully monitor our patients’ throughout the dental procedure and through recovery. You can trust that your child’s health and safety is in capable hands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
Nitrous oxide is one of the safest sedation options used in dentistry. It takes effect quickly, wears off quickly, and has minimal side effects. Most children are able to resume their regular daily activities immediately after having nitrous oxide. There are no long term effects.
Will my child remember the procedure if sedated?
With nitrous oxide the child is still conscious, just relaxed, so they may remember some of the procedure. Local anesthesia is used in combination with nitrous oxide so they won’t feel any pain. During hospital sedation the child is completely unconscious, so they won’t remember anything about the procedure afterwards.
Is hospital sedation safe for children?
Hospital sedation is just as safe for children who are in need of dental treatment as it is for other types of routine surgeries. A hospital setting is the safest place for deep sedation because the child’s vitals can be carefully monitored and the necessary equipment is available to provide for their care.
Is Nitrous Oxide covered by dental insurance?
In most cases, the sedation portion of dental treatment is not covered by dental insurance. We will review your insurance benefits to determine if it is covered or not.
Is sedation required for all dental procedures?
There are many minor dental procedures that don’t require sedation. Local anesthesia is sufficient in some cases. Unless the child is too nervous to allow the procedure to be done, Nitrous Oxide may not be required.
Can my child be sedated for dental cleanings?
In cases of extreme fear or special needs, nitrous oxide can be used for teeth cleanings. It is not typically recommended for most children as routine cleanings take place every 6 months, ideally.
How long does it take to recover from sedation?
The length of recovery depends on the type of sedation. Nitrous oxide wears off in minutes, so there is almost no recovery time. Hospital sedation can take a few hours to wear off and the child may need to rest for 24-48 hours following the procedure.
