What Is Preventive & Diagnostic Dentistry?

The purpose of Preventive and Diagnostic dentistry is to be proactive about your child’s dental health. Keeping the teeth clean and healthy is the ultimate goal of dentistry. When preventive dentistry works as it should through regular teeth cleanings and healthy oral hygiene habits at home, the teeth can stay in place and function properly.

If there are any threats to the health of the teeth and mouth, diagnostic dentistry can detect these concerns in the earliest stages so that they can be easily treated and oral health can be restored.

Benefits of Preventive & Diagnostic Dentistry

There are significant benefits of preventive and diagnostic dentistry, which is why these two services are some of the most important services that we provide. Benefits include:

Tooth decay prevention. Brushing and flossing your teeth at home goes a long way toward maintaining your child’s dental health. Even so, plaque will still accumulate on the teeth over time. Special dental instruments are required to remove plaque and calculus (hardened plaque) from the teeth before it causes tooth decay.

Gum disease prevention. Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue that is caused by a buildup of plaque and calculus on the teeth. Preventive dentistry helps to prevent gum disease by removing plaque and calculus before it can cause gum disease.

Early detection of oral health concerns. Diagnostic tools such as digital X-Rays help to detect cavities and abnormalities that may require treatment. The sooner these things are discovered, the easier the treatment and the better the outcome after treatment. Early detection is especially important for soft tissue abnormalities that may be a sign of oral cancer.

Save time and money. Preventing tooth decay and gum disease can save you time and money that would be spent on restorative procedures to repair the damage.

Procedures Offered

We provide the following preventive and diagnostic dental services:

Comprehensive oral examination. At each visit we perform a thorough assessment of the health of your child’s mouth, including the teeth, soft tissues, and jaw.

Teeth cleaning. Your child will have their teeth cleaned with dental instruments to remove plaque and calculus.

Digital X-Rays. Dental X-Rays may be taken that allow us to assess the parts of the mouth we can’t see visually.

Fluoride treatments. Fluoride treatments are recommended for children’s teeth to strengthen the enamel, which makes them more resistant to decay and damage.

Sealants. Teeth with deep grooves are harder to keep clean and more susceptible to decay. Dental sealants fill these grooves and crevices to create a more even surface to prevent bacteria from penetrating them.

Mouth guards. Sports injuries are the leading cause of dental emergencies. We create custom mouth guards to protect the teeth when children play sports. Custom mouth guards are more comfortable and more effective than store bought mouth guards.

Frequently Asked Questions About Preventive & Diagnostic Dentistry

Are digital X-Rays safe?
Digital X-Rays are the safest option for radiographs. They use a fraction of the amount of radiation that was required for traditional film X-Rays, making them safer than ever before.
How often does my child need preventive and diagnostic dentistry?
Teeth cleanings and comprehensive oral examinations should be scheduled every 6 months for a total of twice a year for most children. Diagnostic X-Rays are recommended once or twice a year, and will be catered to your child’s dental needs.
When should children start going to the dentist for preventive and diagnostic services?
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should have the first dental visit by the age of one. By the time children are a year old they typically have a few visible teeth, and those teeth should be cleaned and examined, along with the rest of the mouth.
Do dental sealants require anesthesia?
Dental sealants can be applied to the teeth without anesthesia of any kind. The procedure is minimally invasive and won’t cause any discomfort.
How often should children brush their teeth?
Children should brush their teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Very young children will need assistance with brushing to ensure that it is done effectively. As children grow and mature they will eventually be able to brush effectively on their own.
Why is the health of the baby teeth important if they just fall out?
Baby teeth are naturally shed as children grow to make room for the permanent teeth. But the baby teeth serve many important purposes such as eating and speech development. They are also placeholders for the permanent teeth when they are ready to come in. It is important to keep the baby teeth healthy until they are ready to be shed naturally.
Is preventive and diagnostic dentistry covered by insurance?
If you have dental insurance, your plan will most likely cover preventive and diagnostic dental services at 100%. Some plans may require a copay, but the cost is typically very affordable.
What if I don’t have dental insurance?
If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about options to make dental care affordable. We believe that all children should have access to dental care in order to maintain their oral health and overall wellness.
